The Maori peoples of New Zealand accurately dubbed the Kunekune, with the name meaning “fat and round.” The breed was maintained by the Maori for millennia, but their origin is under debate. Since there are no indigenous land animals in New Zealand, multiple theories exist as to how the breed came to be. Some theorize that early Maoris brought swine to the area while on voyages, and others think that early whalers and sealers left them as a food source for subsequent visits. Regardless of the origin of their domestication, it is undeniable that they are charming little pigs that love human interaction. The Kunes came close to extinction in the 1970’s, but fortunately were re-discovered by two wildlife park owners, Michael Willis and John Simster, who grew to love this unique breed of pig. They were determined to buy every pig they could find in order to help preserve the breed, which only amounted to 18 pigs at the time. Through their efforts, the population in New Zealand now thrives and their popularity has spread throughout the world. The Kune is perfect for small homesteads and as pets due to their calm temperament and manageable size. They are between 24 and 30 inches high and around 120-250lbs in weight. They are covered in hair which can vary in color and length. Colors range from cream, ginger, brown, black and spotted. Some Kunekune pigs have a pair of tassels, called piri piri, under their chin. They have an upturned snout that helps deter them from rooting up fields and are excellent grazers, which helps to decrease feed cost. The breed standard focuses on correct conformation and good temperament. We strive to continue this with our Kunes. We absolutely love this little pig and are proud to help protect this unique breed.
